Article: Google Public Policy Blog: Me, Myself and I: Helping to manage your identity on the web

Google promotes the 'About Me' feature of it's profile tool as a way to see how others see you online. This is useful for business owners who may have a strong individual association with their business or where their brand is more personality than corporate.

As Google expands the +1 button (that attaches the 'likes' to your profile), your profile will increasingly not only identify how you are perceived, but also influence the results Google delivers to you as they personalise search results.

Profiles are not yet available for those with Google Apps accounts, but this is promised imminently.

your online identity is determined not only by what you post, but also by what others post about you — whether a mention in a blog post, a photo tag or a reply to a public status update. When someone searches for your name on a search engine like Google, the results that appear are a combination of information you’ve posted and information published by others.
