Google is getting serious about paid backlinks to your site

Google for a long time has specifically addressed site it felt were in breach of it's guidelines. This has included delisting sites that are selling links for the purpose of manipulating 'page rank' to influence search results.

Recently, a number of site owners have received a mail similar to the one below, aimed at sites that appear to have bought these services

While I have little sympathy for businesses who actively participated in this, it does appear to open up the possibility of negative SEO where competitors could attempt to negatively impact each other by pointing 'bad' links at each others site. In truth, this probably happens already if it were likely to occur, however the spotlight put on the practice by this report may make others aware of the tactic.

So what can business owners do? This tactic is more of an issue where bad links make up a higher proportion of links to your site or page. By concentrating on getting a higher number links from valuable/legitimate sources through publishing useful content, writing guest posts or making videos for your community, you will benefit not only by reducing the impact of any negative links, but also by increasing your brand awareness and market leadership position.

Dear site owner or webmaster of http://www.domain.com/,

We’ve detected that some of your site’s pages may be using techniques that are outside Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.

Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include buying links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes.

We encourage you to make changes to your site so that it meets our quality guidelines. Once you’ve made these changes, please submit your site for reconsideration in Google’s search results.

If you find unnatural links to your site that you are unable to control or remove, please provide the details in your reconsideration request.

If you have any questions about how to resolve this issue, please see our Webmaster Help Forum for support.

Sincerely, Google Search Quality Team
